Join our MANDARIN Beginner Series

(Level 1-3)

The Mandarin Chinese learner’s starter kit for building a solid foundation and tying your learning experience to communication and community.

We focus on speaking and listening over reading and writing – so that you can get started on the most practical skills right away.

where do i register?

How do we do it?

By covering essential grammar, vocabulary, and conversational building blocks. This helps you get started on building your practical language skill set.

We make a point of capping our classes at 8 students. This ensures that we get to know each other, everyone gets lots of chances to speak, and each person’s individual needs are addressed.

We have separate lecture and tutorial days. That means you’ll have time to ask questions and feel prepared for putting your new knowledge to use, because absorbing information takes time and practice.

How much time exactly?

Each level of our Beginner series is 4 weeks long, which might seem like a short amount of time, but we’ve structured our program this way for a reason. This immersive experience will provide the consistency and accountability that you need to actually learn, practice, and integrate.

In total, you’ll get 12 hours of instruction (that’s just over $10 per hour!), split into 4 interactive lectures and 4 guided tutorials to ensure you have the time you need to absorb, process, and put what you’ve learned into practice.

Included as part of your class purchase is a membership to our weekly conversation club: the Shallot Meetup.

Why is the Shallot Meetup the best thing since onion rings?

One question we get asked ALL the time is, “where do I practice outside of class?”

There isn’t really a place for beginners to practice “in the wild” and that makes it so much harder to ever actually be able to speak a new language. We wanted a non-judgmental space where students could come together, practice, and be social.

Enter: The Shallot Meetup

It’s a casual drop-in gathering providing weekly topics, language games, and reference materials for enriching students’ learning experience.

It’s a place for students to practice in the wild!

Implementing, trial and error, speaking with people, getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things out, this is where the knowledge from the classroom solidifies. And this real-life, socially engaged practice is what elevates intellectual understanding to functional communication.
